Most listings had one grainy photo of the home’s exterior, and many had no photo at all if the agent missed the monthly print deadline.

These catalogues were the bible of the industry—heavy, outdated the moment they came out, and nearly impossible for consumers to access without a realtor’s permission.

The Reality:

  • Briefcases stuffed with paper listing pads
  • Carbon-copy contracts and loose notes
  • Folded road maps (no GPS)
  • Dot-matrix printers screeched at every office
  • Banks rarely had fax machines
  • Voicemail was a luxury
  • Most agents didn’t even own a cell phone yet

If you wanted to see a home, you phoned the brokerage, left a message with whoever answered, and waited—patiently—for someone to call you back. Sometimes they did. Often they didn’t.
